TRE® (Trauma Release Exercises) is a simple body-based method that helps release deep muscular tension and stored stress through the body’s natural tremor mechanism.
Developed by Dr David Berceli, it was originally designed for people recovering from trauma, conflict or disaster, but has since been widely used to support recovery from chronic stress, pain, fatigue, and nervous system dysregulation. The exercises gently activate the body’s innate shaking response, allowing the nervous system to discharge tension and return to a calmer, more regulated state.
-
TRE works by engaging specific muscle groups, usually in the legs and pelvis, to safely trigger the body’s natural tremor reflex. These tremors are thought to:
Release held muscular contraction caused by stress or trauma
Support the parasympathetic nervous system and promote relaxation
Help the body integrate emotional experiences that were previously suppressed or incomplete
During a TRE session, the shaking is spontaneous rather than forced. Practitioners guide participants to stay aware of their bodily sensations and stop at any time, keeping the process safe and contained.
Many people report a sense of calm, emotional lightness, and improved physical ease following a session. -
TRE can be practised with a certified practitioner or, once learned, safely at home.
Tremors may vary in intensity from subtle vibrations to full-body movement.
It is suitable for many chronic conditions where stress and muscle tension play a role, including ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia, chronic pain and Long Covid.
The process should always feel manageable - grounding and rest are encouraged between sessions.
TRE is not about reliving trauma but gently allowing the body to release what it has been holding.

Private sessions typically range from £50–£120 in the UK, $70–$150 in the US, €60–€130 in Europe, and AU$90–AU$170 in Australia.
Group sessions are generally lower cost, often between £20–£50 / $25–$60 / €25–€55 / AU$35–AU$80 depending on location and format.
Self-practice is free once you’ve learned the basics, and many people combine occasional guided sessions with home practice.
-
Many practitioners offer concession rates or donation-based community sessions.
Some TRE providers offer online group classes at lower cost for accessibility.
Free introductory or guided sessions can be found on YouTube and practitioner websites.
