Children’s Book: Gentle Hugs

Gentle Hugs by Lily Guzmán is a beautifully illustrated children’s book created for families living with chronic illness. It follows a mother and child through the realities of illness, helping children understand that although a parent may not always be able to play, go out or do the things they used to, their love remains unchanged.

Written by a rheumatologist, the story explores the different ways love can be shown and offers a gentle way for parents to talk to children about illness, limitations and changing family life. It may be particularly helpful for parents looking for language to explain why they sometimes need to rest or cannot participate in an activity.

The book has received several awards, including the 2026 Kirkus Indie Award and recognition in the 2025 Next Generation Indie Book Awards.
